When people think about careers related to space, they often imagine astronauts, astrophysicists, or aerospace engineers. As space exploration becomes more advanced, people from many different fields are needed to help make deep-space exploration possible. In other words, you do not have to become an astronaut to have a career connected to space.

Astronauts experience muscle loss, bone weakening, radiation exposure, and other health risks during missions, especially in long duration missions. For example, if humans were to undertake a long duration mission to Mars in the future, medicine would be essential in order to plan ahead.

As technology develops further, these careers will likely become even more important than they already are.

Scientists in these fields help study life in extreme environments, search for possible signs of life beyond Earth, and design systems for growing food, recycling air, and supporting human survival on other planets, which is especially relevant for long duration missions.
