How Do Astronauts Sleep in Space?
Sleeping in space may sound peaceful, but it is very different from sleeping on Earth. Astronauts do not have beds, pillows, or gravity holding them in place. Instead, they sleep in specially designed sleeping bags attached to the walls of their spacecraft or space station.
In microgravity, astronauts float rather than lie down. Because there is no clear “up” or “down,” they can sleep in almost any position. Their sleeping bags are secured so they do not drift around and bump into equipment while asleep. On the International Space Station, each astronaut usually has a small personal sleeping compartment that provides some privacy and space for personal items.
One surprising part of sleeping in space is that astronauts do not need a mattress. On Earth, mattresses support the body against gravity, but in space, the body floats naturally. Some astronauts say this can feel comfortable because there is less pressure on the back and joints. However, others find it difficult to adjust to the feeling of floating while trying to sleep.

Light is another challenge. The International Space Station travels around Earth roughly once every 90 minutes, meaning astronauts may see about 16 sunrises and sunsets in a single day. This can confuse the body’s natural sleep cycle, known as the circadian rhythm. To help with this, astronauts follow a strict schedule and use artificial lighting to imitate a more normal day-and-night pattern.
Noise can also make sleep difficult. Spacecraft contain fans, pumps, computers, and life-support systems that operate constantly. Astronauts may use earplugs or other methods to block out some of the sound. They can also wear sleep masks to reduce light.
Astronauts usually aim to get around eight hours of sleep each night, although busy schedules, stress, and the unusual environment can make this difficult. Good sleep is especially important in space because astronauts need to stay focused while completing experiments, repairing equipment, and responding to possible emergencies.

Some astronauts may also experience changes in how they sleep because fluids shift toward the upper body in microgravity. This can create a feeling similar to having a blocked nose, which may make breathing or sleeping less comfortable.
