The Difference Between Meteors, Meteorites, and Meteoroids

The words meteor, meteorite, and meteoroid are often used as if they mean the same thing, but they actually refer to different stages of the same object, and because they sound so similar, it is easy to confuse them. However, once you understand the difference, the terms become much easier to remember.


A meteoroid is the object while it is still in space. Meteoroids are usually small pieces of rock or metal that travel through the solar system. Some come from comets, while others are fragments from asteroids that have broken apart through collisions. They can vary in size, from tiny dust-like particles to much larger rocky pieces.

A meteor is what happens when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere. As it moves through the atmosphere at high speed, friction with the air causes it to heat up and glow. This produces the bright streak of light people often call a shooting star. So a meteor is not the rock itself, but the glowing trail created as it burns through the atmosphere.

Most meteoroids burn up completely before reaching the ground. However, if part of the object survives the journey through the atmosphere and lands on Earth, it becomes a meteorite. In other words, a meteorite is the piece that actually makes it to the surface.

These objects are scientifically important because they can tell us more about the early solar system. Meteorites, in particular, can contain very old material that formed billions of years ago. By studying them, scientists can learn more about the building blocks of planets and the history of our solar system.


Meteor showers are also connected to this topic. They happen when Earth passes through trails of debris left behind by comets. As many small meteoroids enter the atmosphere at once, we see a large number of meteors in the sky over a short period of time. This is why meteor showers can be such spectacular events to observe.
