Why Do Galaxies Collide?

Galaxies are enormous systems of stars, gas, dust, dark matter, and planets, all held together by gravity. They may seem fixed and separate when we look at the night sky, but galaxies are actually moving through space. Over very long periods of time, some of them come close enough to affect each other gravitationally, and in some cases, they even collide.


The main reason galaxies collide is gravity. Every galaxy has mass, and that mass creates a gravitational pull. When two galaxies are relatively near each other, their gravity can slowly draw them together, though this process does not happen quickly. Galaxy collisions take millions or even billions of years, making them far slower than the kinds of collisions we usually imagine on Earth.


Even though the word “collision” sounds violent, galaxy collisions are often not what people expect. Galaxies are mostly empty space. The stars inside them are separated by enormous distances, so when two galaxies pass through each other, most individual stars do not actually crash into one another. Instead, the overall shapes of the galaxies are distorted by gravity. Their gas clouds may interact, their structures may stretch and twist, and over time they can merge into one larger galaxy.

These interactions can have major effects. When galaxies collide, clouds of gas and dust can be compressed, which may trigger the formation of new stars. In this way, galaxy collisions can sometimes lead to bursts of star birth. At the same time, the galaxies may lose their original shapes and become something completely different after the merger is complete.


Astonishingly, astronomers believe that the Milky Way will eventually collide with the Andromeda Galaxy, which is currently moving toward us. This is not expected to happen for about 4 to 5 billion years, so it is not something humans need to worry about. When it does happen, the two galaxies will likely merge into a single larger galaxy over time.


Galaxy collisions are also important because they help shape how the universe evolves. Many large galaxies we see today may have formed through repeated mergers in the past. By studying these events, astronomers learn more about how galaxies grow, change, and interact over cosmic time.
